Starting from 1 September 2020, the 2 nights and 3 days spa program, “Deep-breathing Regimen,” at HOSHINOYA Tokyo will be renewed. This program was first released in 2018 with its purpose to help balance the mind and the body, which are often disrupted by a busy life, and develop habits needed to lead a beautiful and healthy life through controlled breathing. Strengthening lung function and raising body temperature to boost immunity are said to be important during this ‘with corona’ era and are the two points we will focus on for this program. Power walk that effectively trains the lower body, a spa treatment using jade, hot spring bathing that includes stretches, meals to boost immunity have all been newly added to the program. The aim of the program is to learn new habits that will lead to a healthier life through the balancing of the mind and the body. This will be achieved through activities that focus on deep breathing, spa treatments that warms the body, bathing in hot springs, and healthy meals using fermented products and seasonal vegetables.
“Deep-breathing Regimen,” a spa program released back in 2018, was developed for modern people who are suffering from physical and mental stress and focuses on breathing, which can be controlled by autonomic nerves. The impact of novel coronavirus has made long-distance travel difficult, so the contents of the program has been altered to suit this new lifestyle. We hope that guests can improve their immunity and restore the balance of their mind and body, which has been interrupted by a prolonged self-restraining period, at HOSHINOYA Tokyo, a Japanese inn in the heart of Tokyo.
“Deep-breathing Regimen” during the ‘with corona’ era
The impact of novel coronavirus has led to an increase in awareness of immunity more than ever. Immunity is a system that protects you from foreign substances such as bacteria and viruses. It is said that raising body temperature and regulating the intestinal environment is important for boosting immunity. In order to raise body temperature, it is important to move the body to build muscle strength and generate your own heat energy. By controlling the autonomic nerves, which control body temperature, and stimulating the parasympathetic nerves, blood flow will improve, and the heat will then spread throughout the body. The program includes a session of body remake, to work on body core, and power walk, to strengthen the lower body, so that stiff muscles are also worked on to raise body temperature. Hot pot or soup will be incorporated into the meals so that the body is warmed up from the inside. In addition, fermented products will be used to help restore a healthy intestinal environment. Other itineraries for this program include activities that focus on breathing, such as deep breathing exercises and fragrance blending experience, where the sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves are balanced.
5 features of the “Deep-breathing Regimen”
1)Warming the body through spa treatments and hot spring bathing that includes stretches [NEW]
Two spa treatments during the stay will warm the body and balance out the mind and body whilst allowing one to relax completely. On the first night, there will be a full body treatment using warm jade. The smooth feeling of jade will gently warm the body and relieve any physical or mental tension before sleep.
In the afternoon of the next day, there will be a treatment using herb balls made from kneaded and steamed seasonal plants to guide you to relaxation again. Before the treatment on the second day, stretches will be conducted in the reserved hot spring to warm up the body. By taking a deep breath whilst stretching the upper body or lower body, muscles will be relaxed, facilitating deeper breathing.
2)Improving immunity with meals using fermented products and seasonal vegetables [NEW]
For dinner on the first day, soy milk hot pot with mushrooms to boost immunity and white-colored ingredients such as daikon radish, white fungus, tofu which are said to enhance lung function in Chinese medicinal cooking will be served. Eating it with spices such as ginger, green onions, and Japanese pepper will warm the body from the inside.
For lunch on the second day, a special lunch of small dishes using over 30 kinds of seasonal vegetables and ginger soup will be prepared. Focus on the taste, aroma, color, and texture of the ingredients used in each dish to heighten your five senses.
For dinner, Nippon cuisine with fermented products can be enjoyed, which is our own cuisine that combines fermented products and French culinary techniques. Approximately 60% of immune cells that keep our body healthy are present in the intestine so by incorporating fermented products that activate probiotics, the intestine will restore its function because probiotics regulate the intestinal environment.
3)Raising body temperature by moving the muscles in the lower body [NEW] During the first day of consultation, you will learn about the power walk. It helps strengthen the lower body, where most of your muscles are located. Approximately 60% of daily heat energy is made by muscles so it is important to increase muscle mass and exercise in order to generate heat in the body and to raise body temperature. During the stay, the correct way to power walk will be taught so that it can become one of your habits.
4)Adjusting the body and mind to take deeper breathsA conditioning coach from the R-body project will check the flexibility and range of motion of joints and muscles balance to understand the conditions of breathing and the body through a session of body remake on the first day. Personal training is then conducted to adjust the balance of the whole body based on the conditions of each guest. The training is a program that was developed based on medical science. When one is more aware of the use of their body when breathing, the core of the body, and body and mind will be balanced.
The next morning stretches in sync with the rhythm of deep breaths will be conducted with the staff of HOSHINOYA Tokyo. The exercise will take place in a space with a refreshing citrus scent, where guests will be guided to image the opening of their lungs as the air fills every corner in the body. By adjusting breathing and filling the lungs with air, it stimulates and strengthens the muscles involved in lung function and breathing. In addition, taking in slow and deep breaths are said to stimulate the parasympathetic nerves, which improves blood flow, relaxes muscles, and eliminated body cold.
5)Adjusting senses through fragrancesLearn the history of scents, the characteristics of plants used as raw materials and how scents are part of our daily lives. Make your own original oil blend by choosing from 12 kinds of oils, including Japanese essential oil refined from Japanese plants. Guests will be able to seek out the fragrance they want while sharpening their sense of smell with a balanced body and mind. By focusing on the fragrances during blending, the mind can be cleared from any unnecessary thoughts. The oil made during this activity will calm the mind through deep breaths of your favorite scents even when you are back in your daily routines.
