Popular areas for winter and snow in Japan is Hokkaido and the Tohoku region. These areas are not just for winter sports but is a great place to enjoy the seasonal, regional culture. Here, we will introduce a variety of winter trips to get excited about winter! Hokkaido
Ice Village, Tomamu – A mystical ice city

The Ice Village is a winter tradition at Tomamu that has continued since 1998. It is an ice city with 10 ice domes lined up on 3.2 hectares of land. This year, there will be new cafes where Tomamu milk and frozen fruits can be enjoyed.

Lessons on the Asahikawa Zoo are hosted throughout the year. If you want to see polar bears, we highly recommend to see them during the winter, which is when they are most active. Our staff, dressed as a polar bear, will tell the stories and secrets about polar bears.

Icefall Onsen, Oirase Keiryu Hotel – Japan’s first open-air bath surrounded by icefalls

Icefall is a result of waterfalls freezing in the severe cold. At the Oirase Keiryu Hotel, mist-like water is sprayed on the walls of the open-air bath from early December to create the icefall over time. The appearance of the ice depends on the amount of daily sunshine, temperature, wind direction so different icefalls can be enjoyed every day.  

Nebuta Lantern Festival, Aomoriya – Feel the excitement of the Aomori festival!

The regional culture of Aomori can be experienced through this event, where Nebuta lanterns can be enjoyed in the open-air bath, vending machines with frozen apples, as well as oden (hot soup with a variety of ingredients) with ginger miso.
