Morning Forest Private Bird-watching Tour at HOSHINOYA Karuizawa

  • HOSHINOYA Karuizawa

Starting from 22 March to 31 May 2021, a private bird-watching course will be hosted for a limited period of time at HOSHINOYA Karuizawa. This is an activity exclusive to a pair of guests per day and is a tour to find wild birds within the Karuizawa Wild Bird s

Sanctuary, where wild animal experts at Picchio will guide guests through the forest. It is hosted for a pair of guests per day so the beautiful morning forest is available only to a limited number of people.

Background
Karuizawa is located on the southern foot of Mount Asama and it is rich in nature with abundant water, vegetation and clean air. The Karuizawa Wild Bird Sanctuary is adjacent to HOSHINOYA Karuizawa and is designated as one of the four wild bird forests in Japan because various wild bird species are present throughout the year. Spring is the mating season and the wild birds that have spent the winter in southern countries fly to Karuizawa. There are about 25 species observed at most during this season. One of the courtship rituals for male wild birds is singing and they are particularly active after sunrise. The forest itself is an extraordinary place right after sunrise because there are only a few people and the sound of nature is the only sound that echoes. We decided to host an activity for those who have been under stress from many restrictions so that guests can feel liberated from the stress through bird-watching during the early morning, when the forest is at its most beautiful state.

Characteristic 1: The feeling of having the morning forest all to yourself
The Karuizawa Wild Bird Sanctuary is a vast forest of about 100 hectares. Rich nature still remains and about 80 different kinds of wild birds can be observed every year. The time at which this activity is hosted is when there are only a few people so the soothing sounds of the wind and birds can be heard. Also, in Karuizawa, the cold temperature remains even in spring, where the different in temperature during the night and day allows a high chance of morning fog to appear in the forest. As the sunlight hits the morning fog through the gaps between the trees, a mystical, one-of-a-kind experience can be enjoyed.

Characteristic 2: Wild birds specific to the spring seasonBlue-and-white flycatcher

March through May is the mating season for wild birds that have spent the winter in southern countries and have landed in Karuizawa. There are about 25 species observed at most during this season and wild birds of various colors can be observed. One of the courtship rituals for male wild birds is singing and they are particularly active after sunrise, where they all sing at the same time. This is the only season to be able to watch these birds acts this way so the rarity of what can be observed and the beautiful singing of the birds will surely sooth the hearts of people.

Characteristic 3: Private tour by staff of Picchio
The tour is guided by the staff at Picchio, where experts of wild animals gather. You will be guided by staff who can tell the type of species just by listening to the chirping of the birds and is of course knowledgeable on the Karuizawa Wild Bird Sanctuary and loves wilds life. They will guide you to the right places, where the animals are most likely to appear so that you won’t miss a thing in the forest.
