“Sakura Terrace” all to yourself at HOSHINOYA Kyoto

  • HOSHINOYA Kyoto

At HOSHINOYA Kyoto, a ryokan in Arashiyama where all the guest rooms have a river view, will open their “Sakura Terrace” for a limited time starting from 25 March to 10 April, 2021. The “Sakura Terrace” is available to one group per day, where guests are able to enjoy cherry blossom viewing just by themselves. It will be a space where cherry blossoms can be enjoyed depending on the time of day, such as the glistening of the petals in the morning sunshine and the magical scene of the petals floating in the light of dusk. Enjoy the calm atmosphere of spring in Arashiyama as you savor meals under the cherry blossom or make matcha green tea.

Background
The “Sakura Terrace” only opens during the cherry blossom season, where it is only available to one group per day. Arashiyama in Kyoto has been selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots and in spring, about 1,500 cherry trees such as Someiyoshino and Yamazakura bloom, covering the mountain surface. Every year, Arashiyama is crowded with many tourists but HOSHINOYA Kyoto is located in a valley about 1km away from Togetsu Bridge, a famous area in Arashiyama. It is a great location where the cherry blossom viewing can be enjoyed with peace of mind due to its distance from the busy city. With the hopes of guests spending private time during their cherry blossom viewing, we have come to the development of this program.

Characteristics of the “Sakura Terrace”

Wood terrace

Terrace with tatami floors

To be able to relax under the cherry blossoms, there is a wood terrace and a terrace with tatami (rice straw) floors. There is a sofa on the wood terrace so that the viewing is more comfortable. At the terrace with tatami floors, guests can choose to lie down on the floor to gaze at the surrounding scenery. The variety of cherry blossoms on the terrace allows a dynamic view to come true.

Spending time at the “Sakura Terrace”

1. Relaxing while watching the cherry blossoms through a change in time
The “Sakura Terrace” can not only be enjoyed during the day but can be enjoyed depending on the time of day. For example, at night, our Shokadou bento meal which uses seasonal ingredients and colors, can be savored under the illuminated cherry blossoms. Under the cherry blossoms in the morning sunshine, the body can be warmed up with a morning hot pot of seasonal vegetables and chef’s special soup stock. Guests can also enjoy different ways of spending time such as reading a book selected by Keibunsha, a bookstore in Kyoto, or taking a nap under the cherry blossoms.

2.Enjoying matcha green tea and wagashi, Japanese confectionery, inspired by the cherry blossoms of Arashiyama
At the “Sakura Terrace,” guests can make their own matcha green tea and with it, savor wagashi, Japanese confectionery, created by a 100-year-old wagashi store. The wagashi was inspired by the cherry blossoms of Arashiyama and is titled “cherry river.” The tea leaves are specially selected for HOSHINOYA Kyoto and is from the Uji area of Kyoto, famous for matcha green tea.
