Hokkaido’s largest accommodation style resort, Hoshino Resorts Tomamu, will renew their Unkai Terrace, which is scheduled to be completed in August 2021. The deck at one section of the Unkai Terrace will be renewed to protrude to the front, where guests will be able to appreciate the dynamic unkai, also known as the sea of clouds, closer than ever. It will feel as if you are floating in the air, where the sea of clouds will be just out of your reach. For a wider view of the mystical scenery of the sea of clouds, the Hidaka Mountain range, and the sunrise, a new three-story building with a height of about 12 meters will be built. At a glass-enclosed indoor café, guests can choose to spend a relaxing time with either the “Unkai Coffee” with cloud-shaped marshmallows or the “Unkai Soda” with fluffy cloud-like cotton candy. With this renewal, guests are invited to enjoy the magnificent view of nature in Hokkaido.
A staff member who was in charge of maintaining cable cars had always wanted to share the view of the sea of clouds with guests. The thought of wanting to share the view of the sea of clouds with guests was all it took to open the Unkai Terrace in 2006. Many visitors came every year, and, in the fall of 2020, the cumulative number of visitors reached 1.2 million. We decided to renew the Unkai Terrace in the hopes for guests to be able to appreciate and enjoy the sea of clouds closer than ever before.
Characteristics of the Renewal
1)“Riding the sea of clouds” on a deck protruding into the air
The deck at one section of the Unkai Terrace will protrude to the front, where guests will be able to appreciate the dynamic sea of clouds closer than before. The view of the sea of clouds flowing over the mountains and filling the entire surface of it is truly a magnificent view of the sky. With a deck that seems to be floating in the air, guests will be able to feel as if they are on a boat, going out into the sea of clouds.
2)Looking into the distance from the three-story building
From the top floor, which is about 12 meters high, guests will get a wide view of nature such as the sea of clouds, the Hidaka Mountain range, and the sunrise. Watching the scenery from different floors/heights and finding your favorite spot is highly recommended. The panoramic view of nature will surely bring a refreshing start to your day!
3)Indoor café above the clouds
The sea of clouds is never on a schedule, where depending on the weather, there are days when the terrace is surrounded by clouds, inside a fog, but after an hour or two, the sky can clear up where the sea of clouds appears clearly. A once in a lifetime encounter awaits you in the skies of Hokkaido at our Unkai Terrace, where whilst you wait, you can enjoy “Unkai coffee” with marshmallows on top and “Unkai sodas” with cotton candy on top.

Our staff will be checking body temperatures and asking for travel histories upon check-in for all guests. If a guest has a temperature of 37.5 degrees Celsius or higher, we will follow the instructions of the public health center and act accordingly, which may result in a withhold of stay.
>Addition of disinfection procedures to the cleaning of rooms and public areas
In particular, for the cleaning of all guest rooms, alkaline electronic water will be used to disinfect areas that are most often touched such as doorknobs, handles of wardrobes and refrigerators, remote controls, switches, etc.
>Availability of alcohol-based disinfectants at multiple locations around a property
>Alcohol-based disinfectants to be used upon arrival at restaurants for all guests
> High-temperature washing (above 80 degrees Celsius) of tableware (plates and glass) and cutlery, and disinfection of trays.
>Masks to be worn by all staff members
