Winter Charms at Hot Spring Ryokan, KAI
This winter, our nationwide Hoshino Resorts “KAI” brand hot spring ryokans will offer various snow activities and ways to enjoy the superb views unique to the areas around each facility only available during the season. Here are just a few of the seasonal activities available at our KAI ryokans this year.
KAI Enshu – Fortune Tea
In Japan, tea is considered auspicious, and Shizuoka Prefecture, where KAI Enshu is located, is one of the greatest tea producers in the country. At KAI Enshu’s “Enshu Good Luck Stay”, you can experience “Fortune Tea,” a wintertime game of drinking tea and guessing the brand and production area of each one. At the end, a teacup with a lid is handed out to all participants, and if you get the cup containing a standing tea stalk—considered a good omen in Japan—you’ll have good fortune into the new year.

Hot apple brandy from the local distillery and non-alcoholic cocktails are served inside the Kamakura hut, where you can spend time watching the snowy scenery lit by the beautiful lanterns.

KAI Nikko – Scenic Strawberry Stay

During the morning sunrise over Lake Chuzenji, we will offer two kinds of strawberries as an “Omeza*” wake up treat along with Japanese sweets from Toshogu Shrine-related “Oshiyama” sweet shop and sparkling strawberry sake. Then, at sunset, the magnificently vivid contrast between the sun and snow on the Nikko mountains is right before you. Gaze at this peaceful view while enjoying locally-produced Yōkan Azuki fondue, a KAI Nikko original sweet, by dipping the season’s fresh strawberries into warm Yōkan bean jelly.
